It’s been a strange week.

I really wish I had more to write this week along the positive side…but I’m kind of grumpy and in a little funk! Work has been insane this week! Today(Friday) is the last day of the first semester, and therefore that means I get all new students next week. To say I’m bummed is a GIANT understatement because I absolutely love my students! I know I will most likely get a whole bunch of new kids for that I will once again love, but the semester swap still takes a lot out of me!

I would put this this week in the category of “running fails.” I’m really motivated to run, but, since it’s wintertime-and cold-and dark….I’ve spent the majority of the time on the treadmill.

Ah, yes, the treadmill. Yes, last we left, I had just received my new beauty. So. About that new purchase???

I HATE IT.

I don’t like the word hate…it’s SO overwhelmingly negative and just…mean. But, now that I’ve told you my feelings on the word “hate” … I need to say to you again what I think about my new treadmill..

I HATE MY NEW TREADMILL. SO MUCH.

I’ve now given it a few shots. It’s just not any fun. It’s literally harder than concrete is, and I’m not adjusting easily. I feel like it’s not level and that I’m instead running uphill. (my husband tested the levels, it’s actually fine, it’s just me who is off!)My whole body feels like it’s a brand new runner all over again. As you can imagine…I am not exactly thrilled by this.

Thursday was kind of nice out when I got home (30 degrees!) so I drove by my track on my way home from work. I was thrilled to see it mostly clear! So I ate a snack, jogged there from home, and was fully ready for a difficult workout of 800s!

I quickly realized that there was still a bit of ice on the track and decided to play it safe and stay within the outer lane. Some spots had small ice patches and required fancy footing! But the weird part was that there were entire parts of the lanes covered in dog poop turds. So disgusting. Two slow repeats later, I was too grossed out and cold, so I headed back home and hopped on my dreadmill….again…Blaaaaaaaaa.

today I’m planning to hit a local gym after work in hopes that I like their treadmills (desperate measures anyone?! No judging, please!). My SIL& my friend M both belong here and swear they like them. Normally I wouldn’t care about weekend running and my treadmill because I typically would be running outside both days anyway. However. It’s supposed to blizzard Saturday into Sunday so that means I’m stuck doing my long run on a treadmill that I want to beat with a crowbar(that vision gives me immense joy!). Sooo. I’m going to try out a gym treadmill and see if my feet/legs/body likes it! I am so productive that I packed my gym bag on Thursday night!

So please, humor me and tell me something funny, awesome, cynical, or anything that makes you crabby. Ooooh yes, especially things that make you crabby this week! #miserylovescompany

  1. Oh nooooooooooo! 😦 I know how excited you were about the new treadmill. Ugh I’m so sorry it sucks. 😦 I hope you were able to find one that worked out better for you. I’ve been spending way too much time on treadmills lately.

    • Thanks girl! I haven’t used it since Thursday….I’m going to give it a couple of more shots and if we still aren’t buddies, it’s going back! I know what you mean–in the wintertime it is necessary! It stinks but usually I’m so glad that I at least have one!

  2. Ugh – so sorry to hear about this! That isn’t a cheap purchase, so I know it must be upsetting! 😦 I hope that by adjusting or something you can get it to work better for you!

  3. Have you tried running on a treadmill at a gym or elsewhere recently? My first thought was that over time your old treadmill had become uncalibrated and now the new one is tight and calibrated, therefore it feels harder than the old one.

    My treadmill at home is way off pace-wise compared to other treadmills (I run with a footpod and Garmin so I’m able to know my pace across various machines, and I started taking notes on pace when I kept feeling off when I ran at home compared to at the Y).

    Anyway, just a thought. Hope you end up liking it eventually. If it feels harder, then that means it’s making you stronger.

    • I know, I have thought some of those things too-It definitely will make me stronger! i’m planning on using a gym treadmill to test out the differences in how I feel on those. Using the footpod is a terrific idea and I love that you take notes..very smart and helpful when you’re comparing!

  4. Hi there! Just a note of empathy & encouragement. I work in a gym and we got these fancy new treadmills a while back that EVERYONE raved about……..except for me. I felt like the speed was faster than what a particular pace would normally feel like for me and also felt like every time I “tried” running on them , I was either running on an incline or through sand – sometimes both. I even complained to our manager that I thought the belts were too tight. Obviously, nothing was going to be done about it so I just sucked it up and kept trying. I mean, it was probably like once every few weeks but I still kept trying. Finally, a few weeks ago, I got on there and magically it was suddenly different and I had a great run! Since then, I’ve done a few more on the mill (most are outside) and they’ve all gone pretty well. I think that the mind has a VERY powerful effect on our training and depending on whether our last experience was a good or bad one, the memory shapes our emotions and has a psychosomatic effect on the next run. So think positive thoughts and keep at it…it’ll turn around! πŸ™‚

    • Well that is such a wonderful comment-thank you do very much dor writing that! Im going to keep trying it this upcoming week and see how that goes. Its extremely frustrating to me to have “bad runs” on it…but i will keep trying! Thanks so much!:)

  5. I am so sorry to hear that it’s not working for you! Can you return it and try another one, run at the gym in the meantime? Do you think you just need more time, or does it need to be adjusted? LMK if I can help.

    • M!!! I’m not really sure what to do…my husband loves it so of course i feel bad returning it! I might try adjusting it a little…its very frustrating! I didnt end up at the gym on friday nught because i was just plain exhausted by the work week! Its blizzarding here already, quite a bit, so i might delay my LR until tomorrow when i can take my husbands truck to the gym! I’m kind of a baby when it comes to driving in snow!! Thank you!

Ohhhhhh twinie I’m sorry to hear about the new mill πŸ˜₯ but I’m still hoping once it get more Nicole miles on it it’ll starting soften as you beat it into submission with your fierce foot falls haha lol πŸ˜‰ after all your old mill might have been a bit stiff too in the beginning but you ran on it to the point of bowing it in the middle. Pardon the pun/funny but maybe in time this mill will bend to your will also lol πŸ™‚ at least I’m hoping for that. Now … I’m allowed to vent … really … you’re giving permission to get on my soapbox … my complaints are over my wonky right leg and buttock … grrrrr … UGH!!! It’s totally throwing a monkey wrench into my race season and training. I know I’m much faster than my training and these easy runs are showing but the leg isn’t allowing it. It has actually left me with a bitter taste in my mouth over last week’s race because the more I keep thinking about if it weren’t for the leg and having to run conservative I really would have had a chance to win!!! I would have been champion grrrrr!!!!

  7. First of all, I love love love your blog! All your posts are great, but I particularly like this one. (I’m not mean, I swear!) You’re clearly a rockstar when it comes to distance running. No doubt about it. But rockstars have bad runs/days/weeks just like everyone else, right? I really appreciate you sharing that. I think it takes guts. Whatever has you down – the treadmill, the weather, work – you’ll make adjustments and get through it. That’s what we runners do! Think of it like a bad race or run. Just lift your head up and keep moving forward πŸ™‚

  9. I’m sorry to hear about the new treadmill! I’m so picky about treadmills, I can understand your pain. It’s the worst when it just plain out hurts to run on a treadmill, the ones they had at my grad school gym made me want to cry, they had the shortest little belts ever (so I bought my own treadmill, I needed one to get through grad school).
    Also, that is so gross about the dog poo on the track! I don’t understand dog owners who don’t pick it up. I carry at least five bags with me whenever I walk my puggle somewhere.

  10. Winter is getting the better of me too! Hang in there! I have an indoor half marathon this weekend and I couldn’t be less excited about it. I’m undertrained for it and just really really don’t want to do it, but I paid too much money all those months ago to blow it off, so away I go. I’ve never dreaded a race before, it’s such a weird feeling.

    Sorry about your treadmill! I would look into it and see if you can return it. At the very least, maybe you’ll get in-store credit to buy a different one!

    • I’ve only ever come across one indoor half marathon before and it DID kind of entice me because I like running on the track. But doing the math in my head for the loops felt like it would be really tough! you will have to let me know how it worked out for you! I hate blowing off races too, ugh. I get SO angry when I waste money! I hope you ended up going into it with a little bit of happiness!

      • Thanks!! It actually went really well, I came away with a PR of 1:51 (3.5 minutes better than my old PR!). I like to think it was good mental toughness training. I don’t know if I’ll do it again next year, but I am glad to have this experience

  11. I have mostly nothing for you, winter is getting to me too! My latest frustration is that my half marathon on Sunday will be impacted by snow on Saturday! Sure I’d love a snowy Saturday once in a while, but does it have to be the day before I have to leave the house at 6am for a race? I guess I’m sort of comforted by the fact that I didn’t train really, but I still want to actually do it! I think you’ll get used to your treadmill in time. How you feel on it is probably how I feel whenever I step on any treadmill!

    • I thought I wrote back to this right when you posted it, but it must not have gone through on my cell phone (I never have good service at work!) I’m glad you ended up being able to race and can’t wait to read your thoughts on it! Hopefully the roads were well-taken care of and you weren’t slipping and sliding!

  12. You poor thing! It s such a bummer that after all that excitement that your new treadmill is falling so short. But brand spanking new treadmill do have to be broken inβ€”like a nice pair of heels or boots. I hated my Sperrys for a while, and they gave me terrible rubs until one day they just magically fit, and I’ve been in love with them since! hoping that is the case with yoy!

  13. Lol. Love this. 1.) because work for me has also been insane 2.) i hate my treadmill too and 3.) I’m grumpy because it’s cold and rainy/sleetish here misery does love company! So glad to see you have humor in it πŸ˜‰ life isn’t always rosey. But—> these times make our brighter days seem THAT much brighter. πŸ™‚ have a super weekend! Our forecast here tells me I may also be in for a treadmill longrun. Boo!!!!!

  14. Oh no! Im sorry you’re not adjusting to your treadmill! Are you thinking about returning it (if thats an option? Its so weird that you dislike it so much! Im gonna try to get a decent run in outside today because we are supposed to have bad weather this weekend too! Winter is the worst!!

  17. aw Nicole πŸ˜₯ I’m sorry your treadmill is refusing to be your friend. If it’s misery you want, you sure have company though. I’m dealing with a foot sprain and my doc told me no running for at least two weeks… so much for trying to PR the half in Hyannis. At this point, I may have to see about switching to the 10k (cuz I’ve already booked my trip up there and to Boston!).
