Who cares who actually WON the NYC Marathon? Not me!!

Honestly, i hardly ever pay attention to whoever wins the big marathons because the stories of the other 30,000+ runners are SO much cooler. I mean don’t get me wrong..hearing that Ryan Hall can run a sub 5 minute mile and keep that pace for 26.2 miles IS incredible..but what I want to read about is who raised a ton of money for charity? Who was running in memory of a loved one?

How about hearing about the story of the girl who was the 1 millionth runner of the NYC marathon? Yeah, HOW COOL is that?? Julisa Sarabia finished up her first marathon, and immediately a man approached her and said she had to come with him…ummmm I would’ve been a little skiddish on the stranger danger, haha, but as he whisked her away he told she was the ONE MILLIONTH runner of the NYC Marathon. So cool. And in her swag bag was a guaranteed entry for for next years marathon. Awesome. She is planning on running next year, btw.

And then there is THIS touching and sad story:
Joy Johnson completed her 25th NYC Marathon this weekend. At 86 years old, she is the oldest marathon finisher for NYC.
At the mile 20 mark, she fell and not her head. She insisted on finishing the race. The next day, she sadly passed away after laying down in her hotel room. She was an inspiration-a former gym teacher, she took up marathoning upon retirement. Some days she would even do 150 push-ups. Runners world quoted her as saying:

I always say I’m going to run until I drop,” Johnson said the day before the marathon. “I’m going to die in my tennis shoes. I just don’t know when I’m going to quit

Well, Joy, you sure did go out at the top. Congratulations on your last run, a quarter century of NYC Marathons underneath your belt. I hope you’re running a marathon up in heaven!

These stories are the ones that make up the marathon-Not the winners of the race (in case you’re wondering-Priscah Jeptoo and Geoffroy Mutai-two Kenyans, shocking. I know)

Hope you had a great Tuesday!!
